Radiators are the unsung heroes of our space, quietly working away to keep us warm and cosy.  However, now and then they can start emitting a strange odour. Fear not though! We have put together a detailed guide on why your radiator smells and how to get rid of the unpleasant smell. Let’s get your central heating radiators into tip-top shape again.

Most Common Radiator Smells

Several different smells could be emitting from your radiator. We’ll have a look into each one of these possibilities below.

Earthy or Damp Smells

These are some of the most common smells when dealing with radiator problems. It's mostly due to moisture trapped within the radiator system. It may indicate mould growth near or behind the radiator.

If your central heating radiators exhibit this issue, ensure that you verify all valves are securely closed and properly tightened before addressing any visible mould. Next, you’ll want to purchase a mould-cleaning spray (available in your local supermarket or DIY store). However, please be aware that bleach may damage your surroundings so take extra care to cover anything you’re worried about damaging. Furthermore, make sure you open a window to help remove the odour and stop the mould from spreading.

Burning Radiator Smell

This smell is usually noticed when you first turn on your heating after a period of inactivity. The smell is usually caused by an accumulation of dirt and dust burning off the radiator's surface.

This issue is very easily fixed. Simply get out your dusters and give your radiators a good clean. Make sure your dusters are dry and clean for best results. Your radiators will be back to their old self in no time.

Dust Accumulating

Sulphurous Odour

Unfortunately, this is one of the most serious smells coming from your radiator and usually indicates a more serious issue.  The smell of rotting eggs (hydrogen Sulphide) is a very unpleasant smell to have in your space.

As well as the bad smell, it can also cause damage throughout your entire central heating system and boiler. If you smell this coming from your radiators or towel radiators, you’ll need to drain your radiator quickly to avoid any further damage.

How To Drain Your Central Heating Radiators

Draining your radiator will require several items. You’ll need a radiator key or adjustable wrench, towels and a bucket.

  1. Turn off your central heating system
  2. Let your radiator cool down.
  3. Place your towels around the radiator and the bucket directly underneath to catch any water that may spill during the process
  4. Use the radiator key to turn the valve until you hear the hissing sound of air escaping. Once the water starts to trickle out, be ready to catch it. Be cautious to not fully unscrew the valve.
  5. Once the radiator is drained, tightly close the valve.
  6. Refill with water and double-check for any leaks.

While bleeding the system you may spot red coloured liquid with particles of rust. If this is the case, it’s time to start thinking about replacing the radiator.
